Supporting the fast fashion industry is a living nightmare for our environment. Not only due to the ridiculous amount of wastage buried in a landfill, but also the impact on our marine life due to an increase in water pollution.
A recent study by the Ellen McArthur Foundation found that one garbage truck of textiles is wasted every second. To add to this, the Copenhagen Fashion Summit reported that fashion is responsible for 92 million tons of solid waste dumped in landfills each year. That's a heck of a lot of landfill don't you think? These numbers are mind blowing - imagine how they are impacting our environment and the impact it will have on future generations...
According to Sustainability UQ, globally, we now consume approximately 80 billion new pieces of clothing every year - 400% more than we were consuming just two decades ago.
In Australia, we now send 85% of the textiles we buy to landfill every year and are one of second-largest consumer of new textiles after the United States! In Australia alone, we average 27 kilograms of new textiles per annum. We buy it, wear it once or twice, get sick of it (or realise it’s gone out of fashion) and then throw it out because it’s gone out of fashion. Doesn’t it seem backwards?
Buy quality over quantity and items that are classic and won’t ‘go out of fashion.’ Join our tribe and let’s make a difference together!
